In celebration of National Science Week, our event will immerse students from Prep to Year 6 in the 2025 theme: “Decoding the Universe – Exploring the unknown with nature’s hidden language.” This special morning will focus on recognising and understanding patterns through a range of interactive, hands-on activities including:
Patterns in Nature: How natural patterns, such as animal tracks, plant growth, and weather cycles, have long helped First Nations Australians understand and predict changes in the environment and sky.
Mathematical Patterns: The magic of the Fibonacci sequence, spirals in sunflowers, pinecones, and seashells, and how math describes natural beauty.
Patterns in Space: Exploration of celestial patterns, including the phases of the moon, star constellations, and the movement of planets.
Light and Shadows: Investigating how light behaves and how these patterns help us make sense of the world around us.
Through storytelling, observation, and experimentation students will develop an appreciation for how patterns connect us to Country, science, and the universe itself. The event celebrates Indigenous science knowledge systems alongside modern scientific inquiry, encouraging students to recognise that both offer valuable ways to decode the world around us.
Following the morning, students will represent the patterns they observed through drawings and words, contributing to a whole school “Pattern Wall” that will grow throughout Science Week.
