Decoding the Ocean

  • - (AEST)
  • Australian National Maritime Museum
2 Murray Street, Darling Harbour NSW 2000, Australia

This event for high school students brings together ocean scientists and the Royal Australian Navy to present inspiring talks to students about STEM topics, such as climate science, meteorology and oceanography.

Meet some of our speakers:

  • Matthew England is a keen swimmer, surfer and oceanographer and is passionate about protecting our oceans from climate change and other human threats. He voyaged the world’s oceans making measurements at sea and combining maths and science to study how the oceans move heat, carbon, and freshwater around our planet.
  • Lieutenant Holly Boubouras is a Meteorology and Oceanography Officer in the Royal Australian Navy. She forecasts weather for ships and planes and even worked in Antarctica! Her journey shows where a passion for STEM and adventure can take you.

Students can explore the museum, including a Navy Destroyer and our science exhibitions during a self-guided visit:

  • Ultimate Depth – a Journey to the Bottom of the Sea
  • 60th Annual Wildlife Photographer of the Year

This event would benefit students studying:

  • Stage 4 Geography–Water in the World
  • Elective Geography–Oceanography
  • Stage 5 Science–Environmental Sustainability
  • Stage 6 Earth and Environmental Science–Climate Science
