Early years educators actively look for practical ideas to engage children in quality science-based activities.
In the City of Cockburn, the childcare system is working with CaLD, First Nations communities and educators that are often not scientifically literate themselves. Providing a STEM/STEAM expo is a proven way to showcase a range of providers they can connect with for resources and ideas. Having a child friendly multimedia, hands on learning experiences based on sound science principles will help to break down barriers to learning. Demonstrating good teaching pedagogy of engagement will help parents, grandparents, carers and educators to see the power of observation, hypothesizing, wondering and talking through STEM activities related to the theme for this year.
Different activities will be set up in the Coolbellup Library and the Family Day Care Service center. These include interactions with Kanyana native animals, observing mini beasts that exist in compost heaps, manipulating scaled objects to determine sizes and rations, sand play involving track making of animals, Aboriginal artists using natural materials, nature art weaving, book reading about our place in the universe.
