As part of Science Week, we were fortunate to have Dr Sarah Legg visit and guide our students in exploring the nesting boxes that were installed two years ago. Together, the students and Dr Legg carefully moved and adjusted the camera traps to lower positions, making them more accessible for student-led monitoring. The students then searched for animal trails, reviewed past photos and videos, and began collecting data on the different species visiting the nesting boxes. This hands-on investigation linked with this year’s Science Week theme, Decoding the Universe – Exploring the unknown with nature’s hidden language. By examining the secret movements of local wildlife, students engaged with the idea that the natural world holds its own coded messages—patterns, behaviours, and interactions—that can be uncovered through observation, mathematics, and data analysis. Just as quantum science and mathematics help us decode the universe on a cosmic scale, our students are learning to decode the hidden language of nature right in their own backyard.
