At Ocean View College during National Science Week, we will be testing our knowledge and exploring mysteries of our universe through scientific thinking and experimentation!
At the beginning of the week, students in years 7-12 will participate in brain quiz challenges in their science classes. This will involve students working in small groups to decode questions about science and how things work in the world and universe around them. From each science class, 2 groups will proceed to the next round of challenges.
Mid-week, the winning groups from each science class will undertake the Rice Vice challenge during the Wednesday lunch break, in which they will race to be the first group from their year level to lift their bottle of rice, using their physics knowledge of friction and gravity - Newton's Third Law of Motion!
Next up, the finalists will receive their final challenge instructions, on Thursday. What they must do is to work together in their group to design a DIY boat that can withstand the most weight applied, without sinking. They must use their knowledge of density and buoyancy to succeed in this task.
Finally, on Friday, they will test their designs to see which group's boat is the ultimate product of scientific thinking and engineering! The winners will receive a prize and afternoon tea will be provided to celebrate National Science week and encourage non STEM teachers to get involved, see how fun science can be, and support our young scientists!
