National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology. Running each year in August, it features more than 1000 events around Australia, including those delivered by universities, schools, research institutions, libraries, museums and science centres. Over one million people participate in science events across the nation.

The official National Science Week 2025 will be held from 9 to 17 August. Here in Tasmania, it’s more like Science Month! We have Science Week events happening from the 6th to the 25th of August.

The school theme this year is Decoding the Universe – Exploring the unknown with nature’s hidden language. This theme invites students and teachers across Australia to delve into the mysteries of the Universe by exploring the fundamental languages of nature, including mathematics and the groundbreaking field of quantum science.

Science is important for Tasmania.

Tasmania punches above its weight in scientific research with a vibrant and diverse science and research community. From Antarctic and marine science to agriculture, aquaculture, renewable energy and genetics, the island’s unique geography and natural resources support world-leading research and innovation. Science Week is a chance to showcase that brilliance – and bring it to communities across the state.
