The aim of this Star Party is to introduce citizens and students to the night sky, and will be open to all people, young and old. Their awareness and interest in astronomy will be extended on the night via:
Explanations of how and why the night sky changes will be covered. And as a follow-up, all attendees will be encouraged to track changes in the night-sky over the ensuing weeks. They will be provided with printed information and activity sheets to assist them.
The astronomy for beginners workshop will be run by an experienced practitioner who will guide the class, from how to select their first telescope through to what celestial objects would be most suitable to attempt to view first. Emphasis will be on affordable equipment, and no prior knowledge will be required. So, if you are interested in astronomy but don’t know where to start, this is for you!
Astronomy encourages a deep connection with nature, and we aim to foster a sense of awe and appreciation for the natural world. Astronomy is also well recognised as providing the stimulus for an interest in broader scientific fields. Our intention is that, at the end of the evening, people will go away having experienced things that they previously hadn’t had the opportunity to experience, and this may help spark an interest in science as a hobby or even as a career.
