TALK – In conversation with a robot and artificial intelligence – School Program

  • - (AEST)
  • Canberra Museum and Gallery
176 London Cct, Canberra ACT 2601, Australia

Ever high-fived a robot? Step into National Science Week at Canberra Museum and Gallery and meet Pepper—the chatty humanoid who can dance on cue and (occasionally) roast human inefficiency. Alongside Pepper, robotics researcher Dr. Maleen Jayasuriya from the University of Canberra's Collaborative Robotics Lab will take you on a fascinating dive into robotics and artificial intelligence.

Decode the mysteries behind how robots perceive their environment, make decisions, and carry out tasks—from industrial robot arms to social robots like Pepper understanding human emotions. Discover why human elements like psychology, art and creativity are crucial for bringing these machines to life, and what's coming next as robots enter living rooms, classrooms, and hospital wards.

Why come? Experience interactive robot demos. Quiz Pepper live. Discover where robots already shape daily life. Learn simple principles behind how machines sense, think and act. Walk in curious, walk away knowing enough to teach a robot a brand-new trick.

Two participation options:

IN PERSON: Free tickets for schools at Canberra Museum and Gallery, 10:00am-11:30am. Includes the talk and meeting Pepper for photos. Limited to 5 tickets per school (e.g., 1 staff + 4 students) to allow multiple schools access.

ONLINE: Schools receive live stream URL to watch from classrooms, 10:00am-11:00am.
