Roots Without Soil – My Hydroponics Blueprint and Project

  • -
  • South Hedland Primary School
1 Weaver Pl, South Hedland WA 6722, Australia

Students will be introduced to the essential requirements for plant survival within a hydroponics system. They will have the opportunity to set up both do-it-yourself (DIY) and commercial (garden tower) hydroponics systems. Students should be able to explain how the watering system functions using a solar-powered pump. Additionally, they will get to plant and conduct an experiment to measure their growth and present their findings using tables and graphs. The students should be able to draw conclusions at the end of the activity.

Kick-Off Event:

In an engaging learning activity where older primary students will take the lead in presenting their do-it-yourself (DIY) hydroponics designs to younger students. They’ll explain how their systems work, discuss the materials used, and share what they’ve learned through research about growing plants without soil.

In the following days, all students will construct their own DIY hydroponics setups, followed by planting activities using both their individual systems and a shared tower hydroponics system.

This activity aims to spark curiosity, promote critical thinking, and encourage hands-on learning among the younger students.
