Science in Forensics - National science week at the VIFM

  • - (AEST)
  • Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine
65 Kavanagh Street, Southbank VIC 3006, Australia

Calling all university students with an interest in science - this is a unique opportunity to hear from the leaders in the field of forensic science at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine. Our panel of forensic experts will use a road traffic accident scenario to discuss their role and scientific application at each stage of an investigation, and ultimately what happens when it goes to court.

Hear from a panel of VIFM’s forensic experts talking, sharing and explaining how their science is applied in road safety investigations.

We’ll be exploring:

  • Toxicology: the analysis of biological samples to detect and quantify the presence of drugs, alcohol, and other potentially toxic substances.
  • Molecular Biology: the analysis of DNA to assist with the identification of deceased persons in routine cases, mass fatality events and unidentified human remains/missing persons cases.
  • Clinical Forensic Medicine: forensic medical examinations on victim-survivors, forensic evidence collection for analysis and evaluating a person's fitness for interview.

Following our panel discussion, there will be a short Q&A session where the audience can engage directly with the experts, ask questions, and explore new and emerging forensic technologies.
