The College of Engineering, Science and Environment and the University of Newcastle proudly present the inaugural Daphne Keats Oration, honouring Professor Daphne Keats, a pioneer in cross-cultural psychology.

Join us in X101, NUSpace, as Professor Belinda Liddell, the Daphne Keats Chair in Cross-Cultural Psychology, delivers this first oration.

The Daphne Keats Oration highlights the role of psychological sciences in tackling global challenges. This year’s lecture will focus on the global refugee crisis and the mental health needs of displaced populations. Drawing on her extensive research, Professor Liddell will explore the scale of the crisis, why traditional treatments often fall short, and how community, family, and culture shape recovery.

She will also share new neuroscience and community research that can inform more effective, culturally responsive support for refugees. Inspired by Professor Keats’ belief that ‘psychology needed to open its windows to the world,’ this event invites us to consider the role we each play in creating more inclusive, evidence-based mental health care.

This oration is part of the University’s 60th anniversary, celebrating six decades of research, equity and community engagement. Students, staff, psychologists and the wider public are welcome.
