Calling all science sleuths! Join us for “CSI: eDNA - Solving Eco-Crimes with Environmental DNA” where YOU become the forensic scientist solving mysterious environmental crimes!

Ever wondered how scientists track down invisible wildlife or identify polluters who dump chemicals in waterways? Environmental DNA (eDNA) is like nature’s fingerprint system - and we’re putting this cutting-edge science in YOUR hands!

At BioQuisitive’s citizen science lab in Brunswick, you'll step into a realistic “crime scene” where an environmental mystery needs solving. Working in small teams with real scientists, you'll:

  • Collect water, soil, fungal, animal scat, and blood (synthetic, not biohazardous) samples from the “crime scene” using professional equipment
  • Piece together clues to solve the eco-crime mystery, including newspaper articles, maps, and other evidence
  • Analyze your findings and present your conclusions to expert scientists

No prior science experience needed! Our passionate team of scientists, including “eDNA Detective” Mariea Pacheco (field ecologist), “FungiGirl” Ema Corro (mycologist), and “Eco Explorer” Melvin Xu, will guide you through each step. You’ll leave with a take-home science kit to continue your eDNA adventures.

Perfect for curious minds ages 14 and up, each 3-hour workshop transforms complex science into an exciting detective story. You’ll learn real techniques used by scientists to monitor endangered species, track invasive pests, and protect our environment.

Spaces are limited to 25 participants per session, with sessions scheduled on weekends and one evening to accommodate different schedules. The venue is fully accessible, and we welcome participants of all abilities and backgrounds.
