As the National Education Centre for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Reef HQ Aquarium is home to the world’s largest living coral reef aquarium. The aquarium includes a 2.5 million litre coral reef exhibition with over 100 coral species, 100 fish species and hundreds of sea creatures.

Reef HQ Aquarium is located next to the Museum of Tropical Queensland, and in close proximity to the SeaLink Ferry Terminal and The Strand in Townsville’s city centre.

Reef HQ Aquarium is temporarily closed for major refurbishments. Since 2019, we have received $80.1 million from the Australian Government to upgrade the 34-year-old facility. Follow our social media channels and website for updates, as we bring you on our refurbishment journey and announce our reopening in 2023.

But, our Reef Education team are still delivering our internally renowned virtual educational programs, check out our website for teaching and learning resources or to find out more details to book a virtual experience.
