Sydney Weather Tracking

  • -
  • - (AEST)

Many of us have had the unpleasant experience of waking up in the morning, checking the weather, and change into an outfit that turned out to be not such a great match with the physical atmosphere. The numbers that are recorded at the closest weather station may be quite different from the numbers on the street - the difference may even grow as the day, or night, evolves. So, how much can we trust weather forecasts?

In this event about decoding the universe, we take a little dip into the science of weather patterns and variations. During the latter part of National Science Week, students will take a student-designed monitoring device and record the temperatures, humidity and air pressures at their respective homes across Sydney. The official BoM measurements and forecasts will also be recorded. After this week's measurements, we will come together, graph the measurements at the LGA level, and compare the device records with the BoM forecasts.

Note: The circuit board design for the monitor will be made available under GPL v3.
