The Soil Science Spectacular is a one-day science festival designed exclusively for students from Gillen Primary School, Braitling Primary School, and Centralian Middle School. Hosted by the Arid Lands Environment Centre (ALEC) in collaboration with the Westside Community Garden volunteers, the event invites students to uncover the fascinating ecosystems hidden beneath the surface of the soil.
Throughout the day, students will engage in a range of hands-on STEM activities including microscopic soil exploration, compost biology demonstrations, pH testing, and soil profile analysis. Workshops will highlight the vital role of soil in food production, ecosystem health, and even human well-being—connecting soil science with nutrition and the gut biome.
With interactive displays, scientific demonstrations, and expert-led sessions, the Soil Science Spectacular aims to spark curiosity and build scientific literacy in young people, empowering them to understand how healthy soils contribute to resilient, sustainable futures.
