To celebrate Science Week, our school, in collaboration with Wooroloo Primary School, will run a rotation of engaging science activities designed to immerse students in the theme “Bush to Beyond – Decoding the Science around us!”. Set within our various school classrooms and inspired by the recent community excitement around visible auroras, each activity explores hidden systems in nature and how they help us understand the universe.
Students will explore Earth’s magnetic field at the Aurora Station, using iron filings and magnets to visualise invisible field lines, then connect this to how auroras form. A Symmetry in Nature station will investigate mathematical patterns in flowers, leaves, and insects, blending art and science. At the Animal Tracking station, students decode and match footprints to animals using clues. A Morse Code station will teach basic signal patterns and challenge students to communicate without words. Finally, the DNA Discovery station explores life’s blueprint through fun, hands-on activities like creating a paper DNA model and identifying repeating sequences.
Each station promotes observation, inquiry, and reasoning, aligned with STEM learning outcomes. The day will foster curiosity and encourage students to see science not just as a subject, but as a way to decode and connect with the world around them.
