It’s the year 3000, and superbugs have taken over the world. Yasmine, a time-travelling, aspiring pharmacist, has journeyed back from the future to uncover how superbugs began - and what we can do to stop them.
What is superbug? Superbugs are like bad bugs in armour - germs that have learned how to fight off medicines. That means they’re harder to treat and can make people sick for longer. When we use medicine when we don’t need it, these superbugs get even stronger.
Over the past 30 years, medicine use in children has skyrocketed. With prescription rates on the rise, it’s more important than ever for families to understand how to use medicines safely. Inappropriate use - especially of antibiotics - can cause side effects that contribute to the global threat of superbug resistance.
Now it’s your turn to help. In fun, hands-on workshop children and families will explore the science of safe medicine use through creative slime-making. Guided by Dr Tien Bui, a registered pharmacist and research fellow at the University of South Australia, you’ll help Yasmine on her mission to save the future.
Together you’ll work through short, engaging scenarios about using medicine. For each decision made, children will add ingredients to their slime - sparkly toppings for wise choices, or dark and gloomy ones for risky moves. Each choice is linked to real life medicine messages and the science behind antibiotics.
By the end, you’ll create your very own helpful bug - or a mighty superbug - and take home important tips for medicine safety.
