Discover a botanical treasure – the University of Adelaide’s Waite Arboretum. This experimental rainfed collection of trees from around the world informs better species selection for our urban forests, particularly in view of climate change. The Arboretum is also a genetic repository for species which are rare and endangered in the wild. It provides habitat for wildlife, enhances biodiversity, and is a tranquil green space (five kilometres from the Adelaide CBD) for public enjoyment and wellbeing. In addition, the trees of the Arboretum provide valuable environmental services: removing air pollution, storing and sequestering carbon, capturing storm water runoff thereby reducing the load on storm water systems, and cooling the air thus ameliorating the urban heat island effect.

In this one hour walk, you will learn how standardised field measurements, combined with local climate and pollution data was analysed using the iTree Eco software to scientifically quantify and value the environmental benefits of 1255 trees within the arboretum – representing 600 species.

You will be guided to some of the trees with the highest environmental benefits, or you can explore the Arboretum on your own by downloading the free Waite Arboretum App and / or the online Waite Arboretum Inventory map before you come. “Between a human and a tree is the breath.  We are each other’s air.”  Margaret Bates.
