Modern archaeology is a precise science, utilising a vast range of scientific methods and a mind-boggling array of cutting-edge techniques to open windows into our past. Australia is a pioneer in the use of scientific archaeological techniques.
Major redevelopment in the City of Parramatta has provided a rare opportunity for leading archaeologists to excavate a range of significant sites across the city, delivering amazing insights into our Aboriginal and colonial past. Optically stimulated luminescence, archaeo-magnetic studies, sediment analysis, DNA extraction and testing and residual analysis of Aboriginal artefacts are just some of the techniques which have yielded new archaeological evidence.
Join the archaeologists who excavated these sites, on this exclusive tour which will visit a range of locations, using each to illustrate a different aspect of the science and technology utilised in modern archaeology. Discover what the archaeological record has revealed about this early meeting point between an ancient culture and a convict colony.
Participants will enjoy rare access to the Colonial Hospital Pavilion and see behind the scenes at the Phillip Ruddock Heritage Centre, a multi-use site which has revealed a rich Aboriginal and Colonial past. They will be able to view rarely seen artefacts from these sites.
Access between sites will be on foot using accessible pathways. This tour is suitable for adults, youth and children with a keen interest in science.
