Sizzling Solar Ovens is a five day project where senior students and parents will transform the Special Ed Unit into a solar ovens lab. Using recycled materials teams will connect STEM with sustainability on multiple levels.

Combining scientific ideas about how the Sun’s energy can be used to create electricity, maths knowledge relating to measurement and the technology skills of building and design following the Design Thinking Process teams will present their best solar oven to the school at the end of the second day. The challenge is to create a solar oven that gets hot enough to cook yummy, fluffy rice.

Students from P-6 will then participate in making solar ovens with the expert teams over the final three days on a rotation basis. At the end of day five we will cook lots of yummy, fluffy rice and make a big community feast of fried rice for everyone to share.

This project will teach young people and parents the value of solar ovens in a remote place like Woorabinda where it gets very hot in summer. Students and parents will share in discovering how much fun science can be.
