To mark the 50th anniversary of the first Moon landing, scientist Peter Eyland from the Sutherland Astronomical Society shares the remarkable history of space flight and details NASA’s plans to eventually land a human on Mars.

This is an illustrated talk to inspire 8 to 108 year olds.

In 1903 Wilbur and Orville Wright made the first powered, heavier-than-air aeroplane flight. Less than 66 years later, on the 20th July 1969, the space race between the USA and the Soviet Union produced the first landing of two people on the Moon.

In 2020, NASA is focussed on launching an Orion spacecraft on top of NASA’s Space Launch System rocket for an un-crewed test flight.

By 2023 it has plans for a second mission to send astronauts around the Moon and back. NASA’s plans then include the Deep Space Gateway, a spaceport that will orbit the moon and be a base for human and robotic exploration of the Moon and beyond.

NASA’s later plans include a mission to send people to an asteroid by 2025 and Mars in the 2030’s, (including Australians) who are already training for Mars by  living for extended periods in Mars habitat research stations.

Peter Eyland, B.Sc. UNSW (Physics and Maths), M.Physics UNSW, B.D.Hons. London, Th.L.Hons Aust.Coll.Theol., M.A. Macquarie (Ancient History) and currently the Education Officer for the Sutherland Astronimical SocietyInc. will guide us on this journey from the Moon to Mars.
