Marine Science in the Brewery will be a unique event to learn more about Windara Reef, an innovative marine conservation initiative to restore shellfish reefs along the Yorke Peninsula coastline, as well as oyster aquaculture and Narungga (traditionally spelled Nharangga) coastal resource management cultural practices.
Windara Reef is the first shellfish restoration reef of its kind in the state and the largest project in Australia. The project is a collaborative initiative of the State Government, The Nature Conservancy, Yorke Peninsula Council, RecFish SA, University of Adelaide and community stakeholders.
Attending the event you will have an opportunity to sample local oysters from Stansbury whilst hearing from the following guest speakers:
- Anita Nedosyko (The Nature Conservancy) – marine biology and restorative science of restoring Windara Reef
- Steve Bowley (Pacific State Oysters) – oyster aquaculture
- Garry Goldsmith (Narungga Nations Aboriginal Corporation) – sea country
- Peter Hunt (Malacological Society) – information stand where you can bring in your favourite shells for identification
The event will be hosted by the Watsacowie Brewing Company. An added bonus is that owners Brendan and Roxanne are passionate about sharing their knowledge of brewery science, which combined with sights of their vintage copper brewing tanks, is certain to interest many beer enthusiasts.
The event is free, open to the public and for all-ages. Oysters for tasting and antipasto platters for nibbles will be provided, with drinks to be purchased directly from the venue. Numbers are capped so RSVPs are required. RSVP by 15 August 2018 by email or telephone 08 8832 0000.
