He has a Star Wars character named after him, he once solved a Rubik’s Cube in free-fall before the parachute was pulled, and he has starred as the awkwardly-nerdy Dr Elvis in Channel Ten’s Offspring. Now LAWRENCE LEUNG – a multi-award winning and highly sought-after comedian, speaker, actor, screenwriter and science communicator – is coming to Tasmania on a whirlwind National Science Week comedy tour.
Jokers Comedy Club, FunnieS at Frank’s and Fresh Comedy have combined forces to host performances by Lawrence Leung in Hobart (15 August), Franklin (16 August) and Launceston (17 August), with a stellar support line-up at each venue to guarantee three huge nights of science-inspired hilarity.
Lawrence specialises in projects that sit neatly where curiosity and comedy intersect. You’ll recognise him from shows such as Lawrence Leung’s Unbelievable, the AFI Award-nominated Choose Your Own Adventure (ABC) and Maximum Choppage (ABC2). He has written an episode of The Family Law (SBS2), penned pranks for The Chaser’s War on Everything (ABC1), presented segments for The Feed (SBS2), and has also recently presented SLEEP MATTERS, a documentary on the science of sleep, for ABC’s Catalyst.
He has performed his solo shows internationally and has won awards at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Sydney Comedy Festival and Melbourne Fringe. His debut solo show ‘Sucker’ was adapted into an AWGIE-nominated feature film and the screenplay was shortlisted for the 2017 NSW Premier’s Literary Award. Lawrence’s most recent solo show, ‘Very Strange Things’, examines the techniques of fraudulent psychics and received the 2017 Melbourne Magic Festival Directors’ Choice Award as well as a nomination for the 2018 Fringe World – Best Comedy Award.
