During National Science Week we will step into the great outdoors. Students will learn the workings behind some incredible natural wonders. Sustainability is a core value at Sarah Court, so we want to incorporate that into program. The week will be packed of exciting nature-based activities such as:
Creating native flower seed bombs – to celebrate the arrival of spring and to learn about how seeds grow.
Making our own compost bottles – to watch food waste break down.
Observing the weather – using a rain gauge and thermometer to learn about the weather. Crafting our own wind vanes.
Constructing a stick fort (outdoor engineering!) in our bush play area.
Building a worm farm – to further our learning on composting this week and into the future.
Concocting mud kitchen potions– to create chemical reactions in our mud kitchen using ingredients such as bicarbonate soda, vinegar and food dye.
We are currently focusing on Health and Wellbeing. To connect this to our Science Week, we will create beautiful nature journals in which children can record their findings (e.g. observational drawings, collecting and preserving nature finds...). This will add a creative component to the week where students can mindfully reflect on their activities.
