  • - (AWST)
  • Dunsborough Primary School
Turner Street, Dunsborough WA 6281, Australia

The entire school will be completing a in class STEM challenge. Kindy to Year 1 will make a bug catcher.  Year 2 and 3’s will make paper aeroplanes. Year 4 and 6’s will be making a mouse trap racer. Year 5’s will make a balloon racer.

Five Year 5 and 6 students are holding an incursion for the Year 1 and 2 students with the help of a Year 6 class. It will begin with a question about a balloon, then going onto a demonstration of a hover craft using a balloon followed by showing how to levitate a ping pong ball.

There will be 12 stations manned by the year 6’s with the Year 1 and 2s staying for 5 minutes at each station. The stations have a science experiment that is easily done at home. The experiments are

  • making a paper helicopter
  • using water in a bottle with glitter to demonstrate how centrifugal force works
  • rainbow skittles (using hot water to dissolve the dye)
  • set raisins dancing using vinegar and bicarb soda,
  • blowing up a balloon attached to a 600ml bottle using vinegar and bicarb soda
  • mouse trap demonstration and capillary action.

The incursion will end with the science team showing how cola and Mentos react.

A home science experiment competition will be held with the following guidelines. Use every day items found around the house, video the science experiment, explain the science behind your experiment, be creative and show your video to your class. These will be judged with the top 5 to be shown at the assembly and in the front office on their TV.

The canteen will make recess food to go with the bug catcher, a biscuit frog, the paper aeroplane, a plane shaped pizza, and the mousetrap racer, meringue mice.
