Rescheduled: Menzies-Ramaciotti Centre – PCR in your hands

The Menzies-Ramaciotti Centre is hosting a half-day of science activities for high school students. The activities will be facilitated and supervised by Menzies staff. Students will have the opportunity to meet with Menzies staff, as well as interacting with students from other local high schools. Students will rotate through a series of activities including the following:

  • Extract DNA from a banana
  • Perform a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) to check the presence of DNA
  • Swab different surfaces to make bacteria cultures in agar plates
  • Observing different microorganisms in a microscope
  • Learning the proper use of hand sanitizer
  • Tour around the Menzies Lab.

Who can attend

Due to laboratory access requirements, all students must be aged 16 years and over. Teachers and parents are welcome to attend as observers of the activity. We have a capacity of maximum 20 students.

What to bring

Ensure that you wear enclosed shoes (no sandals or thongs). Bring a water bottle.
