Kaarakin is a not-for-profit centre specialising in the rescue, rehabilitation and release of the three endemic and threatened species of black cockatoo that inhabit the southwest of WA. We are located on a large 41 acre site in the Perth Hills.
We will be hosting a free day-long event for children to learn all about black cockatoos, their threats, how to help them. While also providing the opportunity to have a hands on experience with conservation, by building artificial next boxes and watching them get installed on our site.
The day will start of with a dingo meet and greet, where our resident education dingoes will join us for a talk about the dingoes role in the Australian environment and the importance of keystone species.
Sam (Kaarakin's Animal Management Officer) will then give a join presentation with Simon Cherriman (Re-Cyc-Ology) about the biology and threats facing black cockatoos and the importance of artificial nest boxes.
Simon will then lead a workshop where students will have the opportunity to build their own nest boxes out of recycled materials.
After a free lunch and the commencement of the workshop, Sam will take the children on a tour of the 41 acre bushland site and bring the children to meet some of our resident black cockatoos up close and personal in our interactive aviary.
After this will we find a suitable location for each nest boxes onsite and the children have the opportunity to watch them get installed and see their creation up in a tree providing a refuge for our wildlife.
