Our focus for this year Investigate and Innovate links to the National Science Week theme of Innovation: Powering Future Industries.

All students will participate in innovation-related activities during their science lessons e.g.exploring Google Quickdraw and Machine Learning for Kids. These hands-on activities will expose students to the scope and possibilities of technologies, especially artificial intelligence today. We will investigate the real-world applications of these technologies - with support from local experts in industry areas and the contribution of First Nations peoples through conversation with our Indigenous Education Officer about traditions from the local Gumbaynggirr and Bundjalung Nations.

The week will culminate with the Year 6 Science Session where student teams guide the younger classes through a series of Science Week activities. These include presenting an insight into the contributions of Indigenous scientists and inventors using The First Scientists: Deadly Inventions and Innovations from Australia's First Peoples and Heroes, Rebels and Innovators: Inspiring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from History as resources.

The Year 6 teams will also produce 60 Second Science demonstrations aimed at fostering wonder and curiosity in the younger students. Finally, all students will have the opportunity to record their learnings and responses to the session onto wooden boomerang shapes which they will take home to encourage conversation with their family about the Science Week theme of innovation.
