Chemistry academics from Edith Cowan University (Dr Magdalena Wajrak) and Curtin University (Dr Alexandra Yeung, Dr Brenda Rohl) will deliver an exciting and interactive series of science (particularly chemistry) demonstrations and experiments. Live from Curtin Chemistry Laboratories for students in regional and remote Aboriginal communities in Western Australia.
This event will spark a curiosity about chemistry that can be found all around us. Demonstrating the link between current scientific methods and Aboriginal science. By providing interesting hands-on science experiments in a box for students who are based in remote Aboriginal community schools.
Examples of practical experiments include the absorbance properties of polyacrylate polymers in nappies compared to the Zamia Palm wool. Analysis of different chemicals present in various plants using chromatography, identification of smells found in the bush, and identifying components of bush glue. The entire classroom will conduct these experiments together, thereby developing skills in modern scientific methodology, inquiry, and communication. The workshops will be adapted to the differing needs of the students’ age, cognition, and literacy levels.
To engage with you, the chemistry academics will develop activities, with all the necessary PPE and safe reagents, in readiness to post to the participants. Students with the participation of their teachers and elders in the school will use the kits to run their experiments. Alongside Dr Magda and Dr Alex, who will be based at Curtin University in the chemistry laboratory. The event will be live-streamed through WebEx or Microsoft Teams or a similar platform. In addition to the science experiments, Magda and Alex will run a Q&A facility. So that all participants will have the opportunity to ask questions during the event.
