  • Barmera's Bonney Theatre Projection Site
Pascoe Terrace, Barmera SA 5345, Australia

Experience artistic and visionary alternative futures in a science themed world first. Five iconic Australian landmarks transform each sunset in August as illuminart's vibrant regional projections blaze to life simultaneously in a connected trail of spectacular Stories in Light. Collaborating with talented regional artists and animators, illuminart’s brand new animated stories combine local knowledge, ideas and creativity with epic science-fiction that plays in a different way on each site surrounded by other programmed content. Watch out for the special transmission from the future in the first half hour.

Barmera’s Constellation Program brings science and art together by revealing the story of Lake Bonney as told through the eyes of a Murray Cod, and revealing a possible future for the region.

The Story of the Motherfish tells of a mighty river and Bonney Lake, home to the Murray Cod and other living creatures for thousands of generations until the arrival of a frenzy of carp impacted on all the living things that call this place home. This is a story in song about the fragility of the ecosystems of which we and all living things are a part.

Thousands of years from now in The Return of the Murray Cod, long after the Carp Wars were fought and lost, the Brotherhood of Carp have taken control. But a stealthy spaceship has been travelling amongst the stars for generations, patiently waiting to return the Murray Cod to its rightful home. This is a story of celebration and regeneration.

Grab some local tucker, bring a picnic chair or blanket, enjoy the sunset and watch the building light up. Visit all five permanent projection sites and see how they connect to the events trail on a road trip of interesting local activities way outside the city limits.

Proudly brought to you by South Australian projection arts pioneers illuminart and Berri Barmera Council with the support of Arts SA and National Science Week.
