The Workshops Rail Museum should be on every Ipswich visitor’s to-do list. Steeped in history – it was once the workplace of over 3000 railway workers and visitors enter via the historic Timekeepers’ Building – it merges the romance of yesteryear with the exciting technological breakthroughs of the present.

The old boilershop houses the Museum, where you’re dwarfed by beautifully restored locomotives and carriages, and where kids and kids at heart will marvel at Queensland’s largest model railway featuring detailed real-life scenes of the state.

Make history come alive with hands-on exhibits, multi-media encounters and colourful stories coupled with massive industrial machinery. See if you have what it takes to be a train driver when you take the controls of the diesel locomotive simulator. Push, pull and turn your way through the Science Station exhibition and explore how science is used in everyday life.

Step into the operating Workshops on a 30 minute tour. See Queensland Rail’s heritage rolling stock maintenance and what is being worked on the day you visit.

Located in historic Ipswich, 40 minutes drive from Brisbane and 70 minutes from the Gold Coast.
