Fun with Fantastic Fungi

Citizen Science WA group on our annual led by the fabulous mycology expert Dr Laurton McGurk and keen citizen scientist Dr Agi Gedeon. We will have a most entertaining walk around the UWA campus and surrounds, to find and identify the ever-present fungi beneath your feet (not on your feet mind), fungi in leaf litter, fungi on trees, hidden fungi and more…join us to learn more about the phenomenal world of fungi in a casual relaxed setting.

Like us, fungi are heterotrophs, which means they get energy by eating organic materials. Yeasts, moulds and mushrooms are examples of fungi. Some are important to produce bread, wine, beer and medicines; others can produce toxins and cause diseases. We are surrounded by fungi that are essential for cycling nutrients in the environment but we only truly become aware of them when they are fruiting, and it is these mushrooms and moulds that come in a huge array of glorious colours, shapes and sizes. Want to go on a hunt to find some and learn more?

Register for a ticket and we will wait for you before we set off on the foray at 10am. If you’re late look for a group of people with their eyes on the ground near piles of leaf litter etc…
